Event Description:
By wagon, on foot and in canoes, three men (and a dog) set out to explore the new state of Michigan in September, 1837. This first expedition of the newly-formed Geological Corps traveled to Midland to search for salt springs along the Tittabawassee River. Join Kyle Bagnall, Manager of Historical Programs, in a costumed, first-person presentation based on the life of Bela Hubbard – geologist, naturalist, surveyor and explorer – as he describes an autumn journey 180 years ago when “there were no highways but the streams.” This program is held at the pavilion near the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, next to Averill Preserve: From Midland, take N Saginaw Rd towards Sanford. Follow N Saginaw Rd for approximately 5 miles. The Averill Preserve is on the left, across from Hope Rd. Parking is located in a small parking lot, near the pavilion. FREE | Ages 12 and up, under 18 w/adult
